A Unique Christmas Gift Idea, Make Them Yourself

Anyone can go out and buy a gift. It's often the easiest thing to do, unless you take into account driving, parking, crowds, mall food and exhaustion. Anyone can put in the thought, the effort and the caring into making a unique Christmas gift. And when you do, especially when it comes to family, you'll find that you've given something that will be cherished for a long, long time.

Even if you're not terribly creative, the main thing is the thought and the love that goes into the gift.  Children, too, can be taught to give free rein to their creative talents and make gifts for the whole family. Leave it to them to decide what to make for everyone in the family, and odds are it will be one of the most memorable Christmas seasons you can remember.

A few ideas could help you get started when it comes to Christmas gifts for the family. How about quilts and pillows? Patchwork quilts are always appreciated. Just remember to start them well ahead so they're ready by Christmas. Or you can make a rag quilt in a weekend. They're fun, easy and the whole family can lend a hand. Who knows, the quilt you make might just become an heirloom, being put into hope chests and passed down from one generation to another. Isn't that a unique Christmas gift?

When it comes to pillows, maybe a theme cross-stitched or embroidered on will add that personal touch. You could look at cartoon characters, food for a foodie, flowers, personalizing with an initial or a name.

For children, wooden blocks or DIY train set or dolls house which is assembled and tied with a huge ribbon can be easy to create. You can always take the little one along to the store for accessories later to embellish the gift. What about the older members of the family like parents and grandparents?

A gift basket with hand-picked items inside and wrapped with care can make a wonderful gift. For Dad, it could be a repair kit or a wood engraving kit or anything else that he would love to do as a hobby. You could also get this engraved with his initials to make it special. For Mom, it could be scented candles and potpourri sachets and maybe even a special recipe book with her favorite recipes printed out, cut out, pasted and decorated.

For grandparents, how about a handmade picture book using old and new photos that they may not have seen before. No matter what you make for them, you can be sure it will be proudly displayed and a topic of conversation with anyone who visits. Maybe a handmade photo frame with a recent photograph of yours inside? You could also look at handmade jewelry like necklaces or cufflinks. Best of all would be a scrap book of the family with snippets of the funny, happy and memorable times. This will be something they will truly cherish.

It may be imperfect as far as looks go but when it comes to your loved ones, it could be perfect because it comes from the heart and wrapped in love.
